The Ultimate Home Theater Setup Guide (2026 Edition)
Plan a home theatre around your room, speaker layout and display. Compare current equipment for delivery across Canada.
A home theatre works best when its display, speakers and receiver suit the same room and seating plan. Start with how you watch, listen and use the space, then choose equipment. Compare equipment by its role in your system, with delivery available across Canada.

Quick home theatre setup checklist
- Measure the room, seating distance, available screen wall and equipment space.
- Note daytime light, window coverings and whether the room is shared with other activities.
- Choose a TV or projector after checking size, placement and cable routes.
- Draw the speaker layout before counting receiver channels.
- Check speaker load, connections and the receiver's amplified versus processed channels.
- Plan subwoofer placement, power outlets, ventilation and accessible wiring.
- Confirm the complete equipment list, quantities and shipping before ordering.
Start with the room and a realistic system layout
Seat positions and available speaker locations matter more than a room-size label. A 5.1 layout uses five main speakers and one subwoofer; 5.1.2 adds two height speakers. A 7.1.4 layout needs eleven main and height channels plus a subwoofer output. More channels are useful only when the room allows suitable placement and the receiver or external amplifiers can drive them. Use Dolby's speaker setup guides to plan positions.
Begin with a front system you can place properly. Add surrounds and height channels as the room, wiring and budget allow. Keep ear-level surrounds and overhead effects in distinct positions where practical; an all-ceiling layout changes that separation.
Choose the display around light, size and placement
A TV can be practical for everyday viewing in a shared room. A projector and screen offer flexible image sizing but require checking throw distance, lens adjustment, screen material and light control. Neither technology wins every room. Read our TV versus projector guide, then compare TVs and projectors.
Compare equipment by the job it needs to do
| System role | Models to compare |
|---|---|
| Front speakers |
DALI SONIK 3 bookshelf speakers with DALI SONIK CINEMA as a same-family centre candidate. View the product pages to buy online. Paradigm Premier 220B v2 with Premier 620C v2; enquire for a coordinated Premier v2 front stage. |
| AV receiver |
NAD T 758 V3i: seven amplified channels and Dirac Live room correction. View the model to buy online. Anthem MRX 740 8K: seven amplified channels and 11.2-channel processing with ARC Genesis. Contact us to plan amplification for expansion. |
| Screen-area sound |
Bluesound PULSE CINEMA MINI: powered soundbar with HDMI eARC; no separate AV receiver required. Buy online from the listing. MartinLogan Discrete Cinema Soundbar 65: passive three-channel soundbar requiring external amplification. Enquire about the complete system. |
These are alternatives within each role, not a requirement to buy every item. Check the receiver manual against speaker impedance, desired playback level and channel layout. A same-family centre is a useful starting point for consistent front-speaker voicing, but cabinet fit and seating coverage also matter. Explore speakers, AV receivers and subwoofers.
Allow for wiring, acoustics and setup
Budget for stands or mounts, a projection screen where needed, cables, delivery and any installation labour alongside equipment. Check ceiling or wall cavities before selecting installed speakers. Provide the manufacturer's required ventilation around electronics. Soft furnishings and suitable acoustic treatment can help manage reflections, while careful subwoofer placement and calibration address bass integration. Room correction is a setup tool, not a replacement for placement or construction planning.
After installation, confirm speaker polarity and channel assignment, set distances and levels, choose crossovers and run the receiver's calibration procedure. Test films, dialogue and music at normal listening levels before making further changes. Fixed budget tiers cannot establish the cost of your room without a complete scope.
